China had a truly awful first quarter in 2020, and despite its recent return to near-normality, is forecast to grow by a paltry 1% this year. What challenges will this very poor outlook present for China's leadership? Apart from more infrastructure spending, what programs and stimulus policies will Beijing put in place to alleviate hardship, provide jobs and sustain livelihoods? Will China provide a safe harbour for recovering markets, or must businesses navigate further turbulence ahead?

Simon Rabinovitch
Asia Economics Editor of The Economist
Simon Rabinovitch is Asia Economics Editor of The Economist. He is the author of an essay on the Chinese economy, “The global centre” (published this year), and a special report on the Chinese financial system, "Big but brittle" (2016). He previously served as a correspondent with the Financial Times and Reuters in Beijing, Shanghai and London, reporting on finance and economics. The joint winner of a Society of Publishers in Asia award for coverage of China, Simon’s commentary has appeared on BBC and NPR. He also had a brief stint as a table-tennis reporter during the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Outside of journalism, Simon has served as National Secretary for the Rhodes Scholarships for China, a scholarship for students to attend the University of Oxford. He has a BA from McGill University and an MPhil from the University of Oxford.
