This August, supported by the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, we sit down with a group of notable leaders occupying roles as industry captains, thought leaders and progressive business people who are driving growth and value across their respective businesses. In this engaging and thought-provoking session, we focus on how empowerment has the potential to accelerate growth and advance critical socio-economic outcomes in the country.

    Sam is a trained economist specialising in understanding the complexities of the South African economy. Prior to joining the EICN, Sam spent time in both the public and private sector, first as an economist within the Economic Policy division of the National Treasury, and then as a consulting economist at Econometrix, and Deloitte. During his time in private sector, Sam specialised in analysing events and government policies to dilute these into constructing business strategies. Sam also spent time in Switzerland as an economist for airline industry body IATA. Sam holds a masters degree in economics from Stellenbosch University, and has studied further at the Insitute for Social Studies in The Hague, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Levy Economics Insitute of Bard College in New York State.

    Prabashini is an experienced financial services executive and qualified actuary. She has over 20 years of experience across Old Mutual Limited spanning various markets and functions. Prabashini has been Managing Director of Old Mutual Corporate since November 2019. Prior to this she was Chief Financial Officer of the Old Mutual Mass and Foundation Cluster. In recent years’ she has developed her leadership capabilities through leading teams and change initiatives as well as mentorship of young professionals. She is the Group Executive Committee sponsor of the actuarial professionals within Old Mutual and is also a non-executive director across a number of boards.

    When not working she enjoys spending quality time with family and close friends, and travelling to new places and learning about different cultures, which she has fortunately been able to re-start this year.

    As the CEO of the FluidRock Governance Group, her legal, local and international business and corporate governance knowledge, and experience are the result of spending more than a decade in the boardrooms of listed, private and state-owned organisations.

    Ronelle believes that a fit-for-purpose corporate governance approach that is integrated with strategic business outcomes is key to ethical and successful organisations. She believes in building long-term business relationships and to be the trusted partner when directors and executives require assistance through growth and challenging times.

    She is energised by the opportunity to share with clients the invaluable learnings from either observed or self-learned successes and failures in her role as CEO, Director and Group Company Secretary. As a thought leader in the field of strategic corporate governance, she is a supporter of concepts such as lean governance, long-range planning, diverse thinking, etc.
    She consults on setting competitive sustainable strategies for organisations and then assists to translate strategy and implement into the business. A key aspect of this is to craft the business reports to Exco and to the Board and its committees and then into the public realm.

    Videsha is an accomplished, pioneering corporate leader who stands at the forefront of the dynamic South African technology space. She is presently CEO and Chairperson of the Board of legal technology company, LexisNexis South Africa.

    Her comfort in the industry derives from her 20 years’ plus experience working in high-profile ICT companies such as EDS, Microsoft and Intel. She also successfully ran her own business focusing on strategy and value creation. She has many accolades, including being honoured and recognised as the most influential Woman in Business and Government for ICT in Africa. She was spotlighted by Forbes as a change maker in Africa. In 2017 Videsha was recognised as one of the 50 most inspiring women in South Africa as part of the global Inspiring Fifty initiative spearheaded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa. She was part of the 'Africa 50' - The 50 Leaders in Data Centers and Cloud, driving change in Africa and in 2022 scooped the coveted Top Woman in Tech award at the Africa Tech Awards.

    Videsha has always capitalised on opportunities to be an instrumental change-maker not only in the corporate world but also on issues close to her heart. At LexisNexis she gets to combine her passion for empowering women and girls, with the company’s purpose of Advancing the Rule of Law in order to create meaningful impact across the African continent.

    Videsha believes that one should never be defined by a title but rather embrace opportunities to learn new skill sets and be enriched by new experiences – this is evident in her approach to her career and life in general. Her leadership philosophy is a servant one and she believes that her role in the lives of the people around her is to help them achieve their full potential so that they and their organisation can thrive.

    Videsha has an MBA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal specialising in Advanced Strategic Management. She is also a certified SAP and ITIL consultant, an accredited NLP coach and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and a Bachelor of Commerce from the then University of Durban-Westville (UDW).

    Blessed with a teenage son and daughter who are her greatest pride and joy, Videsha is an avid reader, a Reiki master and enjoys yoga, solitary walking and daily meditation.

    Madam Justice Zukisa Tshiqi

    Justice at Constitutional Court of South Africa

    Justice Zukisa Tshiqi, is currently a Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
    She was elevated to this Court, as a permanent Judge in 2019. Justice Tshiqi acted as a
    Judge in various courts such as the Labour Court, the High Court and the Competition
    Appeal Court before being appointed as a High Court Judge in 2005. She was
    elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2009 and served in that capacity for ten
    years. Justice Tshiqi is passionate about human rights issues, equality and
    empowerment. She aligns herself with institutions such as Black Lawyers Association
    Legal Education Centre, South African Chapter of the International Association of
    Women Judges, South African Judicial Education Institute and African Regional
    Judges Forum as a means of ensuring that the constitutional rights of all citizens are
    not violated.
