During the event, we will be joined by representatives from local NGOs working on diversity and inclusion. Come out for the conversation and stay for the fireworks.

  • Mattie Bekink (China Director of The Economist Corporate Network)

    Mattie Bekink

    China Director of The Economist Corporate Network

    Mattie Bekink is responsible for the Economist Corporate Network’s China strategy, including programme development and client servicing across China. She also provides support to all Economist Corporate Network programmes worldwide with a China component.

    Ms Bekink has extensive experience in the public, private and policy sectors. Prior to joining The Economist Group, she was the Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission in the Netherlands. She also ran an eponymous consulting business, advising senior executives from businesses, universities and non-profit organisations on China policy, strategy, public affairs, and corporate social responsibility. Ms Bekink practiced law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, has worked with the US-Asia Law Initiative at NYU Law School and the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative China Program, and served in the legal department at General Motors China.

    Ms Bekink has a BA in International Relations from Stanford University and a JD from the Georgetown University Law Center.

    Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications at Shanghai Disney Resort

    Murray King is Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications at Shanghai Disney Resort. In his role, he is responsible for all aspects of public affairs and communications for the resort, including external and internal communications, public relations, government relations, corporate citizenship/community relations and language support services. Murray also serves as the Chairman of the resort’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council, leading the resort’s overall gender equality, accessibility and PRIDE employee and community engagement strategies. Shanghai Disney Resort is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and a state-owned enterprise under the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Phase I of the resort officially opened to the public on June 16, 2016. The USD $5.5 billion resort project is one of the largest foreign invested projects in the history of China.

    Prior to joining Disney in 2011, Murray worked for the Washington, DC-based public affairs consulting firm APCO Worldwide as the firm’s regional managing director for Greater China. During Murray’s seven years with APCO, he worked with a wide range of corporate clients on China public affairs and investment issues, serving as a key advisor on public affairs issues to some of the largest foreign investors in China, with specific expertise in assisting companies to build and execute strategic government engagement and corporate responsibility programs. He has also been a frequent commentator in both Chinese and international media on China current affairs issues.

    Murray is an attorney and diplomat by profession, having practiced law in private practice in Canada for several years before serving in Canada's diplomatic service as a Trade Commissioner focused on trade with China. Murray’s diplomatic postings included assignments in both Beijing and Shanghai, with a focus on market access in highly-regulated sectors including rail, automotive and aerospace. Since leaving government in 2004, Murray has become an active member of the international business community in China and served for three successive terms as an elected member of the board of governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (2008-2010) and prior to that for three years as the chairman of the chamber's Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. He has also served as a member of the national board of directors for the Canada-China Business Council (2007-2011). Murray has resided in China for the past 22 years, of which the last 19 have been in Shanghai.

    Wang Yan is the Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Relations at Shanghai Disney Resort. Having joined the resort in July 2012, Yan leads the Government Affairs team to support sustainable business growth through strategically engaging with government authorities, proactively protecting the resort’s reputation and building partnerships with key stakeholders. In her Community Relations role, she is also responsible for developing, executing and supporting projects that demonstrate the resort’s commitment to social responsibility.

    Yan started her career with Disney as Vice President, Sales, Shanghai Disney Resort, before assuming her current role in November 2016. Prior to joining Disney, Yan was the Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation and Marketing Department of China National Tourism Administration. With over 20 years of international tourism experience, Yan has developed extensive knowledge and strong connections with government stakeholders, media and travel companies.

    Yan graduated from Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences with a Masters of Science in Economics.

    Hans helps lead the China operations for one of the world’s premier advertising agencies and serves a client-list comprised of some of the most well-known global as well as Chinese brands -- Mars, Mercedes-Benz, Disney, Alibaba, Goodyear, Volkswagen, SC Johnson, Anta, Unilever, Midea, McDonald’s, Jägermeister, and Johnson & Johnson.

    With a background in consumer insights and brand strategy, Hans established BBDO Voices – the agency’s proprietary consumer insights program which is now on its 11th year. Under his leadership, BBDO China has become synonymous with some of the most awarded brand campaigns in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of both creativity as well as marketing effectiveness. He also helped architect the agency’s drive into digital marketing and eCommerce, enabling the agency to thrive in a market that is widely considered the world’s most dynamic in terms of digital innovation.

    From his start in Manila, he has over the years worked in agencies in Toronto, New York, and Chicago. Shanghai, however, has been his home for the last 13 years. He was named Greater China Brand Strategist of the Year in 2013 by Campaign Magazine.

    Director, Training & Development of Inclusion Factory

    Marina is a social activist focusing on the empowerment of individuals with disabilities through education, skills development, and occupation; she is specializing in projects that are focusing on the inclusion of the "other" back into the society.

    Marina is co-managing the first industrial workshop in China which provides respectful and dignified employment for people with intellectual and mental disabilities. Marina is in charge of the training aspects at the Inclusion Factory, both internally and externally. Additionaly, Marina has initiated the Social Inclusion Academy [SIA] - a full three months training program for the certification of qualified Job Coaches who will lead the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities into china’s workforce. Currently, Marina has been developing external inclusive employment projects with big players, such as Flex Zhuhai and L’Oréal Suzhou – supporting those companies with the establishment of inclusive work lines in their companies.

    Marina is a public speaker on disability and inclusion topics, focusing on raising awareness to the abilities and rights of people with different abilities. Marina is a Disability Equality Facilitator and holds an Ed.M. in Diversity & Equity in Education from the University of Illinois.

    D&I Consulting (DNIC) is a corporate advisory and training consultancy that supports the LGBT+ community and promotes LGBT+ inclusion at the workplace. Our mission is to build an inclusive workplace that embraces diversity, so that everyone can bring their whole selves to work.

    Born and bred in Hong Kong, Ivy is a strong LGBT+ ally with a mission to improve LGBT+ mental health at work. Since 2015, she has been working with numerous multinational companies in developing their LGBT+ initiatives in Hong Kong, Greater China and APAC. She led the Asia pioneering Hong Kong LGBT+ Workplace Inclusion Index, a benchmarking tool to measure companies’ LGBT+ inclusion effort at the workplace. She has worked with United Nations, Chambers of Commerce, Consulates and other regional NGOs to drive LGBT+ inclusion at the workplace in Greater China and Aisa.

    Ivy relocated to Shanghai in September 2017, she was the main organiser of ShanghaiPRIDE, and is part of the driving force for LGBT+ workplace inclusion in China. Ivy is the winner of Future Award Leader of American Chamber of Commerce Shanghai 2021 and featured in Tatler's Asia Gen T list 2021. Ivy holds MSc Organisational Psychology and Psychiatry at King’s College London and BSc Social Sciences at University of Hong Kong.
