Event Details

Against a backdrop of de-globalisation and rising protectionism, the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) should be a welcome development. This agreement brings together 15 economies in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for a third of the world's population and ~30% of global GDP. Yet, the judge is still out on what its ultimate impact will be.

While everyone seems to agree that it doesn't achieve much in terms of trade openness, RCEP has been praised for aiming to address the 'noodle bowl' problem of Asia-Pacific's trade architecture by harmonizing different rules of origin. Which in turn should help strengthen and create supply chains - sorely needed given the impact of the pandemic. At the same time, RCEP is non-binding in areas such as information-sharing and standards adoption, with many regarding it as a geopolitical tool that might end up accelerating the trend towards the regionalization of the global economy.

Please join us in an interactive discussion with a panel of experts on RCEP's impact on the global and regional trade systems, and its implications for business.
