The landscape for China's cross-border investment is facing unparalleled disruption:

  • Domestically, strict lockdown measures and travel restrictions due to the government's zero-Covid approach are impacting companies' operations and investment plans. And we are also seeing a series of policy and regulatory developments geared towards achieving the goals outlined under 'Xi Jinping Thought', including with respect to environmental sustainability, the 'dual circulation strategy' and 'common prosperity.'
  • Externally, protectionism continues advancing, while tensions between China and other nations have escalated over issues such as technology and economic security. Some foreign governments are taking actions to diminish their dependence on the Chinese market and increase the resilience of their domestic value chains. And they are also restricting foreign investments in sectors considered 'critical' for national security

Despite this, it is undeniable that the Chinese market continues to be a top investment priority for foreign MNCs; and authorities have been releasing measures to further open-up the market. Also, while China's overseas investment has been impacted by the increasingly challenging external environment, it appears to be doing better than before, driven by an acceleration in outbound M&A transactions and investments along the 'Belt and Road.'

Given all this, what is the likely trajectory that China's cross-border investment will take going forward? Which are the sectors and areas that will drive opportunities? And what are the challenges that both Chinese and foreign companies are facing?

Please join us for a breakfast briefing where Benjamin Crawford, Partner at international law firm Allen & Overy, will help us explore these questions and talk about the key developments impacting the investment opportunities for foreign MNCs in China and for Chinese MNCs looking to 'go out'. Following this our Beijing Director will engage in a conversation with a panel of experts.

Please note that this event is limited to senior-level executives and per invitation only. If you are not an existing member of The Economist Corporate Network, but would like to learn how you can attend our events, please contact us.
