We are not yet in a global recession, but governments and businesses the world over are bracing for rising costs, continuing inflation, and slower growth. As the war in Ukraine and pandemic disruptions continue to wreak havoc on supply chains, it seems that stagflation is here to stay. The picture is not entirely bleak, however. Unemployment levels across many economies are very low, recession is less likely for most Asian economies, and there remain opportunities for innovation regionally and globally in areas like climate or digitalisation that can be drivers of corporate growth that address pressing global problems.

Join us for the Regional Strategic Forecast where we will consider how companies can cut through the noise about the challenges of this moment and constructively think about risk resilience and standing up to the next recession. We will explore the factors contributing to a potential global recession - including interest rates, energy and commodity price volatility, supply shocks and more - and the factors mitigating it - including high employment, household savings, high corporate profits, and more. We will also explore the drivers of growth in Asia moving forward amid shifting supply chains, capital flows, and the role of China.     Simon Baptist

    Global Chief Economist & Editorial Director of The Economist Intelligence Unit

    Simon Baptist is Editorial Director and Chief Economist at The Economist Intelligence Unit. Prior to his current role, he has held a number of other senior management and editorial positions in the business, including Managing Director for Asia, Regional Director of our Asia editorial team, Director of Global Forecasting, and Consulting Director in both Europe and Asia

    Simon’s focus is on the global economy, national and international political developments, and public policy. He engages with business, government and international organisations, helping them to understand the operational and strategic implications of the EIU’s forecasts.

    He has a doctorate in economics from and was a lecturer at Oxford University, along with degrees in economics and science from the University of Tasmania. His academic research investigated technology and the determinants of productivity in manufacturing firms.

    Group Country Head & CEO of Société Générale (China) Limited

    Hugues de la Marnierre has been appointed Group Country Head for Societe Generale in China since November 2020. Meanwhile he remains Chief Executive Officer of Societe Generale (China) Limited.

    Hugues was Group Country Head for Societe Generale in Switzerland since July 2016, in addition to the previous role he had since September 2013 as CEO of SG Zurich. He was previously Global Head of Client Management for SG CIB, since April 2011. Hugues joined Societe Generale in 2009 as Global Head of Client Management for Global Markets.

    He started his career in 1987 as a manager for a Derivatives Trading company. In 1989, he founded BNP dB 3A, an equity derivatives trading specialist then joined NatWest markets in 1991 as Head of Risk and Derivatives. In 1993, he was appointed Head of Equity Derivatives for the Americas at Crédit Lyonnais. Hugues de La Marnierre moved to London in 1997 as Global Coordinator for Equity Derivatives Marketing at Paribas. In 2000, he became Global Head of Sales at Commerzbank, before joining Natixis in February 2008 for a similar position. Hugues de La Marnierre holds a Certificate of Advance Studies and a Master from Université Paris Nanterre.

Headquartered in Germany, Bayer is a global leader in life science focusing on healthcare and agriculture. Prior to Bayer, Yong was President of Monsanto China and Director of Corporate Affairs for Asia and Africa at Monsanto which was acquired by Bayer in 2018. For three decades serving in the private sector, Yong has worked in the US, Canada, Singapore and most recently China. His area of professional experiences includes biotech product regulatory policy, R&D, safety assessment and commercialization, international trade, sustainability, public affairs and corporate communication.

    Mattie Bekink

    China Director of The Economist Intelligence Corporate Network

    Mattie Bekink is responsible for the Economist Intelligence Corporate Network’s China strategy, including programme development and client engagement across China.

    Ms Bekink has extensive experience in the public, private and policy sectors. Prior to joining The Economist Group, she was the Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission in the Netherlands. She also ran an eponymous consulting business, advising businesses, universities and non-profit organisations on China policy, strategy, public affairs, and CSR. Ms Bekink practiced law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, has worked with the US-Asia Law Initiative at NYU Law School and the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative China Program, and served in the legal department at General Motors China.

    Ms Bekink has a BA in International Relations from Stanford University and a JD from the Georgetown University Law Center.

    Robert Xiao

    Director, Beijing of The Economist Intelligence Corporate Network

    Robert Xiao is the Director of the Economist Intelligence Corporate Network (EICN) in Beijing. He is responsible for engaging with top executives in the region and providing insights on economic and policy trends to support their business development in the Chinese market.

    Mr Xiao was previously a PhD Supervisor and Deputy Director of the Impact Finance Hub at Deakin Business School before joining EICN. His research mainly focused on the fields of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, and economic and financial policy analysis related to the Chinese market. He has authored multiple publications in Financial Times Top 50 Journals and been awarded major research grants jointly by the Australia Academy of Social Sciences and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He also has more than a decade of experience teaching business courses including in Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Finance, and Bachelor of Commerce programmes at leading universities.

    Mr Xiao has a Ph.D. in Finance and B.Com. (Hons) in Accounting and Finance from Monash University.
