2023 opened with euphoria over China's swift economic rebound, rise in consumer spending, and open borders. This excitement was felt not just here in China, but across Asia and the world. A rebound in the tourism sector started in late 2022 with welcome news that Chinese tourists were ready to get on the road again. Thailand welcomed them with flowers. Unsurprising since pre-pandemic China was its largest source of tourists (28%). Unable to travel overseas during the last three years, Chinese tourists also shifted to internal travel. During this year's May holiday, the number of domestic trips made was up 19% from 2019 pre-pandemic numbers, but total spending was on par with 2019, suggesting that travellers are more conservative with their spending.
With summer holidays upon us, we expect to see Chinese tourists taking off to multiple destinations. At a time when the question of the hour is whether China's increased consumer spending will be sustained, travel and tourism data is an excellent indicator of consumer confidence. Join us to understand the recovery of China's tourism sector, increased consumption, and the implications this has for China's growth outlook for the remainder of this year and beyond.
There is no better location to consider issues and trends in Chinese tourism and consumption than Shanghai Disney Resort so we are especially delighted to convene in the Cinderella Ballroom at the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and you are welcome to stay for the fireworks.
