Event Details

Japan needs to secure its energy supply. There is hardly a more timely and important topic in 2022 for Japan.

Join us at this EICN event where we bring together some of Japan's top experts to discuss the country's energy future.

Global energy prices have rocketed due to both demand and supply factors, as well as unyielding pressure toward clean energy transition, at least in the West. The war in Ukraine has exacerbated supply challenges and further accelerated energy costs.

Nuclear energy is expensive and new facilities take years to be built. Solar, wind and other renewables, while better and cheaper than ever before are far from capable of filling the gap left by other sources if they go. Fossil fuels - by far Japan's largest energy source - carry a significant environmental cost.

And now Japan has committed to becoming a carbon neutral society, with zero emissions by 2050. Economists, environmentalists and Japan's residents at large are growing increasingly doubtful as to whether the noble target was overambitious.

As a resource-poor country, the implications of even small changes to how "power" trades can be significant for Japan. So, what is the best mix of solutions for Japan? How will businesses and future investment in Japan be affected by the country's current energy dependency? What projects (infrastructure, R&D, etc.) should the government prioritise and why? How should energy prices be regulated in Japan, or should they be at all?
