Event Details

Investing in infrastructure has been a core pillar of economic development in South-east Asia and Malaysia, but the region continues to face gaps in connectivity. How are Malaysia and other ASEAN countries leveraging on outbound investments from China, Japan, South Korea and Australia to improve their country's transport networks, electricity-generation capacities, telecommunications and water infrastructure?

China's Belt and Road Initiative, in particular, is the most ambitious plan supporting the effort to bridge regional infrastructure gaps. In April 2019 president Xi Jinping signalled a strong commitment to develop a more inclusive, transparent and sustainable approach to BRI projects at the second Belt and Road Forum. Many observers and market participants now refer to discussions at this forum when they speak of the positive developments unfolding under the initiative.

The focus on international participation and sustainability is an important step-change for the future of the BRI, as well as for green urban development in South-east Asia and Malaysia. How might this also translate into profitable opportunities for companies? What are the types of challenges and risks associated with the BRI and other types of infrastructure projects, and how can companies mitigate or overcome them? What is the profound impact on resources, the climate and the environment?

Join us as we review the progress of infrastructure development in South-east Asia. We invite a panel of business leaders to share how their companies have strengthened their capabilities and networks to help them ride on the wave of opportunities emerging. We also share the latest ECN research from a set of two reports, "BRI beyond 2020", published by ECN South-east Asia, sponsored by ECN member Baker McKenzie. All speakers will be announced shortly.
