On 9 March South Koreans will choose a new president, who will occupy the government's top job for the next five years. It is expected to be a close race. Lee Jae-myung, the centre-left candidate and a former civil rights lawyer and provincial governor, is running as the presumed successor to the outgoing president Moon Jae-in. His bloc represents the Minjoo or Democratic Party of Korea, which holds a majority in the national assembly.
On the right is the People's Power Party's candidate Yoon Suk-yeol, a former Chief Prosecutor and a relatively novice politician. Despite heated debates and mutual finger-pointing in recent weeks, it is far from clear where the policy differences between the two parties lie. A third candidate, Ahn Cheol-soo of the centrist People Party, is seen by some as a potential decisive factor in the presidential race.
